Updates

How Nametags keeps itself up to date.

Nametags checks for a new version when it opens, and every six hours after that.

Installing an update

When there’s a new version, a notice appears in the window: Nametags X is available, followed by what’s new.

  • Install downloads the update, checks that it really comes from Nametags, replaces the app and reopens it. Your Mac may ask for your password.
  • Not now hides the notice until the next check.

Installing restarts Nametags, which briefly interrupts the camera, so finish your call first.

When an update changes the camera

Some updates include a new version of the Nametags camera. Nametags never swaps the camera during a call; it waits until the camera is free. Afterwards you may see one of these:

  • Nametags updated its camera. Restart the app — and if the camera is still missing, restart your Mac. Click Restart Nametags.
  • Restart your Mac to finish updating the camera. The new camera is installed, but macOS only switches to it after a restart. Click Restart… when it suits you.

If an update can’t install

If Nametags can’t replace itself, you’ll see “Nametags could not replace itself.” This usually means the app isn’t in your Applications folder. Move it there and try again, or download the latest version from the download page and install it over the old one.

Versions 0.2.1 and earlier can’t update themselves. Download the latest version by hand.
